The chairman of the Tobacco Committee Taskforce, Dr Cedric Alependava has announced that the 2010 Tobacco Bill Regulations will be launched in May 2013.
The Committee is currently finalizing the standards for who should be eligible to be licensed to sell tobacco products and the graphic labels.
“We are developing the criterion and charge for licensing and the graphics before forwarding it to the Attorney General to finalize and present it to cabinet for blessing,” Dr Alependava said.
The Taskforce has decided on seven different graphics in the area of second hand smoking, pregnant woman, and child mouth and lung cancer effect.
Dr Alependava stressed that Solomon Islands will be the first country in the South Pacific to have graphic warning effects of smoking on its cigarette packaging.
The Taskforce is planning to use local graphics if possible. Source PMO
